Elian Hägglund is a Gothenburg-based musician originally from Norrland. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Folk and World Music from the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg. Prior to that, he studied music at both folk highögskola and university.
His musical foundation is rooted in Swedish folk music and Eastern Mediterranean traditions, complemented by a passion for traditional music from around the globe, and he performs using the lavta, acoustic guitar, and mandolin, occasionally incorporating vocals.
On the guitar, he moves fluidly between melody, accompaniment, bass lines, and percussive techniques. The lavta opens up a completely different style of playing, featuring a new repertoire, distinctive ornamentation, and significant potential for microtonality.
For Elian, music serves as an escape to another world, where the most magical moments arise from the live interplay on stage. Improvisation creates a musical dialogue in which he and his fellow musicians engage in a responsive conversation. Music has always been an escape to another world for Elian, and he strives to share that world with others.
Elian is involved in projects and ensembles of varying sizes and purposes, ranging from duos to a quintet, covering material that spans Swedish folk music and ballads to samai's and original compositions. In addition to performing, Elian works as a music teacher for primary and middle school students.
